Have your say on the move towards compulsory online VAT filing

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have put forward recommendations that from 1 April 2012 all VAT-registered businesses with a turnover below £100,000 should file their returns online.

Under the plans, such businesses will also be required to make their VAT payments electronically and do their VAT registration, deregistration and variations of business details, ie changes of address, online.

HMRC have issued a consultation to find out the views on the changes. In particular, they hope to understand:

  • which customer groups will need assistance with the move to digital services
  • what assistance might be appropriate to meet those needs
  • how to publicise this to ensure it is taken up
