Disappearing Jobs

There is little doubt we are living with the effects of globalisation, as the number of jobs in the economy continues to reduce.

For many years there was a belief that if we worked hard we would enjoy our choice of job and career.

We believed our wealth would continue to increase while the prices we paid for goods and services would continue to fall.

Our belief was accompanied by a sense of well-being, as our standard of living compared favourably with other countries.

However, in recent years as jobs disappear to other markets around the world we have been struggling.

Although we have experienced economic downturns in the past this time it feels different.

This time the effects of globalisation and technology are hitting home, as jobs are affected across all sectors of the economy.

There is still a belief that the higher the levels of education and skills people have the more likely they are to get jobs.

There is also a less popular belief that a key factor in determining the sustainability of jobs is whether or not a particular job can be done overseas.

Regardless of the reasons for the disappearance of so many jobs there is a need to find solutions.

One solution, already mentioned, is the need to increase the levels of education and skills across as many people as possible.

A second solution is the need to support start-up businesses and companies with the ability to export, as they create new local jobs.

A third solution is the need to attract people from around the world in the form of tourism and companies from around the world in the form of inward investment.

SO, the effects of globalisation and technology will continue to affect us all but we can deliver solutions to create new jobs.

What do you think? Is your job disappearing?
