  1. Can you describe your business? Emerald Flat Roofing is primarily a roofing company which specialises in flat roof construction and waterproofing. Our main waterproofing products are called ClassicBond and RubberBond FleeceBack which are types of EPDM rubber sheeting. We also carry out any necessary timber and insulation works required and offer many other services such as emergency repairs, roof cleaning and inspection, and uPVC facais/ gutter installation.

  1. Why did you start your own business? I started my own business in flat roofing as it had been something I was doing since I was 17 and really enjoyed, I had been working with a well established local company since then and learned all I needed to know from them and felt it was my time to make a name for myself and perhaps further down the line have something to hand over to my children.

  1. What are the best things about running your own business? There are so many pluses its hard to know where to start but the main one would be flexibility, being my own boss allows me to be there for my son or fiancée when im needed. The other things are meeting new people, gaining positive feedback from them and doing things your own way at your own pace.

  1. What are the main challenges facing the business? There is a lot of hard work behind the scenes such as pricing and advertising and a lot of very late nights staring at a computer screen but it is a necessity. On the practical work side the main challenge is the weather which can halt a job if its too wet, frosty or windy especially working at heights where safety is a huge factor and ensuring no damage is caused to the customers property, this can lead to weeks of slow progress.

  1. What advice would you give to someone starting a business? It is very hard to leave behind a solid job and a steady weekly wage but if your heart tells you to go for it then do it, don’t leave regrets. Be prepared to put in the hard work and the rewards will come. There are business courses out there for first timers and id recommend them as it took a lot of doubt and worry off my mind when everything is explained properly.

  1. Can you describe your experience of running a business in three words or less? Fulfilling, Fun and rewarding
