Can you describe your business?

We are a family run business based in the village of Killyclogher. We have been opened since 2001 and we specialise in freshly baked pizzas. We have our own unique dough recipe and all our pizzas are made fresh to order with all ingredients sourced locally!

Why did you start your own business?

My father owned Pizzarama when I was younger and after he sold it to my uncle he opened up Pizzamac on the Curr Road, Beragh, which my brother Kevin now runs. I have been making pizzas since I was 14 years old and although I trained as an electrician, making pizzas is something I have always done and I felt it was a natural step to extend the business, use my initiative and open up my own take-out, which has been going for the last 16 years.

What are the best things about running your own business?

What I enjoy about running my own business is being my own boss.

It is definitely hard work but the job itself is satisfying and rewarding. I get the opportunity to meet new people every day, and catching up with regular customers and what they’ve been up to is always enjoyable. Plus, I have the added bonus of being about more during the day to spend time with my family.

What are the main challenges facing the business?

One of the challenges facing the business would be finding the right people to work alongside you. It is important to find people who are punctual, reliable and trustworthy, but thankfully I have a great bunch of staff. Everyone gets along and helps each other out when needed. There is great atmosphere amongst the staff and I think that although everyone works hard, there is a bit of craic also.

The main challenge though, for me, would be ensuring that every pizza that leaves the premises is 100% up to Pizzamac’s standard, and to each customer’s satisfaction and enjoyment.

What advice would you give to someone starting a business?

Be confident in your abilities and always strive for perfection. There are so many small businesses out there that competition is always rife – it is so important that you give it 100% every day and I think that that kind of commitment and hard work can be seen, and appreciated, by your customers. You can never take anything for granted. You have to always try your best and it will pay off.

If you want to go for it, go for it!

Can you describe your experiences of running a business in three words or less?

Hard-work, rewarding, satisfying.
