Can you describe your business?
A professional cleaning service, domestic and business: Building maintenance including painting and decorating, professional gardening service, joinery, small repairs, electrical works, etc.
Why did you start your own business?
I have worked for various companies previously doing a combination of the above work. I decided to start my own business so that I could use my own ideas and experience of more than 18 years and develop them without having any restrictions placed upon me.
What are the best things about running your own business?
I enjoy running my own business because it allows me to be my own boss and have the flexibility that comes with it. I can decide my own working hours which allows me to have a better work/life balance. I enjoy working hard but equally I enjoy spending time with my family which I wasn’t always able to do before.
What are the main challenges facing the business?
The main challenges facing the business mainly revolve around organisation. At times I am inundated with work and at other times, things can be quieter. I obviously have to be prepared to work very long hours especially during the summer in order to keep up with the work but I know I will have quieter times during the winter. It is good to plan to have more inside work such and painting and decorating during the winter as well. It is also important to plan economically throughout the year to balance out income. I would say that I have been busy for the last three years, my customers have been very happy with my work which always helps to build up the
business.
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
Initially it is imperative that your business idea is a good one. You must be prepared to put the work in and to provide a high quality of work with competitive prices. In my experience, you need to put your heart and soul into your new business, be prepared to work
long hours with little financial reward initially. If you provide a high quality service you will build up a customer base, these customers
will recognise high quality work and be prepared to pay appropriate price.
