Farm Feed Efficiency This Winter

By CAFRE Development Service

A series of winter feeding seminars and on-farm workshops, focusing on feed efficiency are being delivered by CAFRE Advisors. The favourable weather of late summer / early autumn has allowed the majority of livestock farms to build up sufficient winter forage stocks.

However there are differences across Northern Ireland and the various events are organised at a local level to deal with specific issues. AFBI silage analysis indicates 1st cuts are on average of higher dry matter, energy and intake characteristics than that of the previous three years. The question now is – how to make best use of silage and alternative forages for profitable production this winter. Farmers will have the opportunity to discuss completing or updating fodder budgets, balancing high protein costs, relative value of straights and practical steps to achieve on-farm feed efficiency.

To attend one of the events in your area or to get further details, please contact your local CAFRE Development Adviser or DARD Direct Office on 0300 200 7843.
