Can you describe your business?

Gerarda McGlone Photography is a fun-filled, creative photography business in Tyrone specialising in newborns, children and family portraiture. I have a studio situated about two miles outside of Omagh, where I offer families different types of photo shoots, the most popular being newborn and cake smashes (first birthday).

Why did you start your own business?

It all happened by accident really. My art background led me to study photography at Ulster University, which I loved, and from there I just started photographing everything from my own family events to portraits. As I photographed more, I started to love it more. I’ve always wanted to do something artistic and working with children has always been a passion as well. Photography gives me the opportunity to do both. In November 2015 I rebranded and the studio’s been busy ever since.

What are the best things about running your own business?

For me the best thing is being able to capture those precious moments and special bonds in family life. Every session is different. I love getting to know each family individually and planning what works best for them to allow their personalities to sparkle. Meeting new people and being able to share their precious moment’s remains to be my greatest pleasure. I feel so lucky to get to do the job I love and am honoured to capture these moments in their lives.

What are the main challenges facing the business?

I suppose the main challenge for me is finding consistency between the studio and home life. A lot of time is spent preparing for sessions, photographing and endless hours in front of the computer screen editing client galleries. I love my job so I find it hard to switch off. Photography is also such a competitive market, which means you really have to keep on your toes to get anywhere.

What advice would you give to someone starting a business?

Go for it! I’m only 23 and so proud of what I have achieved already. It’s exciting, nerve wracking and will take a lot of late nights and hard work but it’s worth it in the end.

Can you describe your experience of running a business in three words or less?

Challenging yet rewarding!
