Can you describe your business?
Since October 2013 djbit has provided bespoke software development and IT consultancy for small and medium sizes businesses in Northern Ireland. This has included developing web applications, customising open source software and providing training and best practice advice where appropriate.
Why did you start your own business?
I enjoy a challenge and wanted to have the choice to pick and choose projects that were of interest to me.
What are the best things about running your own business?
I’m very thankful for the opportunity to work with a wide range of people and clients on projects I enjoy and to see the work I do help local businesses to grow. Being able to determine your work schedule is also an added bonus.
What are the main challenges facing the business?
Getting time to do everything. It’s important to keep up to date with the latest technology and trends but finding time to do this whilst also earning an income can be challenging.
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
Think carefully about what you’re wanting to do and your motives for doing it. Starting a business has pros and cons and businesses can fail – be aware of the risks and have a plan. It’s also important to have a good work-life balance – money and success as ends in themselves won’t bring you happiness.
