Smart Energy Systems: New Funding Available

Funding to help businesses create affordable, low carbon energy solutions

As part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, the government is investing a new Prospering from the Energy Revolution challenge.

The challenge will provide investments under three key areas:

  • smart local energy systems demonstrators and designs
  • innovation accelerator fund
  • research and integration services

The demonstrator and concept design competitions are now open for applications.

Demonstrator programme
Up to £40 million is available for three smart energy system demonstrators. These will include new business models that intelligently link supply, storage and demand patterns across power, heating and transport. The result will be a dynamic energy system that can:

  • dramatically reduce whole system energy costs and emissions
  • transform services to users
  • improve efficiency, productivity and resilience
  • reduce environmental impacts

The deadline for applications is at midday on 25 July 2018. Find out more about the competition for demonstrators and apply.

Concepts and design programme
Up to £1.5 million is available for studies into new, smarter approaches to local energy. These should show how they could improve future energy services, include reduce energy bills and meet air quality targets, in a UK location at least the size of a medium-sized town. The best projects will be invited to develop their ideas further in a future competition.
