Can you describe your business?
Molly Maid is a domestic cleaning company that offers a flexible and affordable bespoke service to suit individual needs and requirements across Northern Ireland. We offer a range of different services including weekly cleans, spring cleaning, holiday let cleaning, end-of-tenancy cleans and more.
Why did you start your own business?
We were both in education for a long time and wanted to do something we could call our own. We worked for many different businesses and did not see the point in working to make someone else wealthy, especially with us being well educated ourselves, we had a lot of self-confidence really to say if they can do it, we can too.
What are the best things about running your own business?
There are a few things, first it would have to be being your own boss and being able to work to your timetable. We have two young children and wanted to make sure we spend as much time with them as possible.
Secondly, I am quite a perfectionist and in previous jobs there have been things I really did not agree with, things half done, but I had little power to change things. Being the one in charge means I can ensure things are done correctly.
What are the main challenges facing the business?
The biggest challenge is staffing. We are constantly looking for new staff and we find it hard to fill vacancies with reliable, hardworking individuals. We really don’t know why people are not jumping at the opportunity to work for us. We are a well-recognised brand, offer competitive pay and incentives and no zerohour contracts anywhere in sight. There isn’t really anything else as I believe if you have the will power you can accomplish anything.
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
There is a lot of great support out there, so you really don’t have to do it by yourself. Find out what is available, so you don’t have to waste time recreating the wheel, as they say. Technology is also a lifesaver. There are many wonderful apps, services that can help do tasks that are vital to any business. You can use these to help save valuable time.
